TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (German: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) is a German sports club based in Hoffenheim (now part of Sinsheim). Unlike the vast majority of European top-flight clubs, which represent large cities, Hoffenheim represents a small community: Hoffenheim itself has a population of around 3,200 and was practically a village until 1972, when it was annexed to the city of Sinsheim, which has around 35,000 inhabitants. Until the 1990s, Hoffenheim was an amateur club in the lower leagues. The small club's rise to the top of German football was due to the financial support of Dietmar Hopp, a native of the town and a graduate of the club's youth team, who is one of the founders of the software giant SAP.
