Benfica Lisbon

Benfica was founded in 1908 as a merger between the teams "Sport Lisboa" and "Grupo Sport Benfica" from the Benfica district in the north-west of Lisbon (see Benficaium). Benfica was one of the strongest teams in Europe, and was the first to break Real Madrid's dominance in the Champions League (then "European Champions Cup") by winning two European Cups in a row (1961 and 1962). The team has not won any European titles since, losing numerous European Cup finals, to Milan (1963 and 1990), Inter Milan (1965), Manchester United (1968) and PSV. Eindhoven (1988), in addition to one loss in the 1983 UEFA Cup final to Anderlecht and a loss in the Europa League final to Chelsea in 2013 and Sevilla in 2014. The team of the 1960s is considered one of the best in history, with a large part of its success being due to one of the greatest players of all time, Eusebio. (Wikipedia)
